Trailblazer: Salim H.
Hi, my name is Salim. I am 14 and I live in South Carolina. I was born in Illinois.
I like a lot of things, and I especially like to be with friends and family. I have a big sister and a little brother. We play video games together and learn how to share and encourage each other to do better.
I started playing drums this year, and I’m committed to being the best drummer I can be.
I’ve always loved music as long as I can remember. Some of my favorite artists are Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin, Justin Timberlake, and Rivers Cuomo. I can listen to their music all day, and I like a lot more artists, too. I started playing drums this year, and even though it’s hard to learn well, I’m committed to being the best drummer I can be. My dad encourages me to practice and now I have a lot of fun when I do, especially when I can tell I’m getting better. I’m about to start middle school and will be learning how to play the trombone. I also love to sing, and I joined the chorus at my school in 2022. I hope to be a professional musician one day.
I’ve been taking Tae Kwon Do classes for the last year. It’s very challenging, but I like how it makes me push myself. I also get to do it with friends, which makes everything better.

Sometimes in my house, we have painting time. We all get canvases, paints, and brushes, put on some music, and paint whatever we are inspired to paint. One of our rooms is full of the creations we’ve made. I like some of the paintings better than others, but there is beauty in each one. We don’t do it as often as I would like, though, because there’s a lot clean-up involved.
I also read a lot. I like books that are funny and include characters I can relate to. One of the best books I read recently was Pax, written by Sara Pennypacker and illustrated by Jon Klassen. It’s about a boy and his pet fox. It’s a great story about the power of friendship.
As a family, we like to travel together. My mom was born in Zambia. One of my best memories was when we went to Zambia. It was hot and there were a bunch of mangoes and guavas. I also met my grandmother and aunts and uncles, and played with many cousins and new friends. We’ve also been on a road trip through Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota. We spent a lot of time in the car and saw some really pretty places. One of my favorite ways to see new places is to go camping. One time I went camping with just me and my dad. We ate campfire food, hiked through the woods, and saw a 20-inch woodpecker. It was huge and had a big red head.

The last time we were on a trip, I met a kid at the pool and it turned out that he lived only 30 minutes away from me. Our families became friends, and the next week, I went to his birthday party.
My parents met when they were serving at the Bahá’í World Centre in Haifa, Israel, and they have always been trying to learn about serving the Faith. I have been in Bahá’í children’s classes most of my life, and this year I’m excited to be a part of a junior youth group.
I think family and friends are the best part of life. I’ve learned that to be a good family member or friend, I need to be trustworthy, kind, and think of others before myself.
