Bahá’ís Believe: World Religions Are from One God

What is our purpose on Earth? Is there life after death? If there is a God, why do bad things happen? We often turn to religion for answers to life’s biggest questions. The world’s faiths offer clues about such mysteries.

Bahá’ís believe that all major world religions come from one God, even though they have different teachings. Think of your favorite teachers in school. They showed you new ideas and challenged you to do your best. Humanity also has Teachers, sent by God throughout history. These Teachers, or Messengers of God, help us grow and develop our virtues.

These Messengers are like mirrors that reflect God’s qualities, such as compassion, love, and joy. Bahá’u’lláh wrote that although each Messenger has a different name and mission, They “all arise to proclaim His irresistible Faith…” God’s Messengers and their faiths include:

• Krishna – Hinduism
• Abraham and Moses – Judaism
• Buddha – Buddhism
• Jesus Christ – Christianity
• Muhammad – Islam
• The Báb – Bábí Faith
• Bahá’u’lláh – Bahá’í Faith

Among these world religions, many key truths remain the same. For example, they all teach us to treat others with kindness. Most encourage prayer, being thankful for our blessings, and being of service to humanity.

Bahá’u’lláh wrote that the purpose of religion is “to establish unity and concord amongst the peoples of the world…” When people of different faiths focus on the things we have in common, we can build bonds of respect and friendship. Our shared beliefs and goals can lead us to a more peaceful planet.
