Bahá’ís Believe: Sacred Writings
What if you found a priceless treasure, and when you opened it, it revealed many of life’s mysteries? Books are gems with this kind of power—especially the sacred books of the religions of the world. In the Bahá’í Faith, a treasury of holy books, letters, and prayers was revealed by Bahá’u’lláh, the Báb, and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.
So far, Bahá’í writings have been translated into about 800 different languages. Bahá’ís read these sacred writings every morning and evening. Not all of them at once, of course—if you put all of Bahá’u’lláh’s writings together, they would fill more than 100 volumes!
Bahá’ís often memorize writings and prayers that express joy or lift spirits in time of trouble. At community gatherings, it’s common to sing verses that have been set to music. The Bahá’í writings address topics such as establishingworld peace, the unity of the human race, and developing virtues.
Bahá’u’lláh said, “Immerse yourselves in the ocean of My words, that ye may unravel its secrets, and discover all the pearls of wisdom that lie hid in its depths.”
Many Bahá’í kids memorize this prayer, from which Brilliant Star gets its name:
O God, guide me, protect me, make of me a shining lamp and a brilliant star. Thou art the Mighty and the Powerful.—‘Abdu’l-Bahá
